THEATRECIAN

The most prolific English Theatre Ensemble in Kolkata, Theatrecian has staged about thirty productions, and carries names such as Jean Paul Sartre, Eugene Ionesco, Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, Edward Albee and Tom Stoppard in its repertoire. Founded by Tathagata Chowdhury on 4th January, 2001, Theatrecian celebrated its 5th Birthday on 4th January 2006 in style - performing Albee’s  “Zoo Story” to a packed house at the Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai as part of the annual Yatri Theatre Festival. Invited by the Yatri committee to stage the production, the theatre troupe from Kolkata made history of sorts by being, albeit arguably, the first English theatre group in Kolkata to be invited to perform in Mumbai.

Theatrecian is known in the stage circles for production of timeless classics of thought provoking playwrights such as EdwardAlbee's "Zoo Story", Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot", Jean Paul Sartre's "The Respectable Prostitute" - however, the group also experiments

with original productions. In fact, the very first production by Theatrecian was "There's Something About Nemo", a Tathagata Chowdhury original.

 

Apart from the world of stage, Theatrecian has also delved in productions of diverse nature - from the short film "Hiya Mom" (which is presently doing the rounds in festival circuits) to event management and promotion of various cultural events ranging from Quiz shows to panel discussions, apart from the constant patronage meted out to young theatre enthusiasts in the city through workshops and interactive discussions.

 

On the 23rd of March 2006, Theatrecian staged Harold Pinter's "The Homecoming" at 6 30 p.m. at Gyan Manch. Read reviews of the play here .
